Disposable Income

You can use this service to rank your customers based on their discretionary income - the household's relative purchasing power.

Target customers by disposable income band

This service helps you to:

  • Identify the household disposable income most common in your customer base
  • Identify and target new customers with high spending potential
  • Identify geographic areas of high disposable income in order to target new prospects
  • Analyse customers' spending potential based on their disposable income band, for up selling and cross selling campaigns.

How it works

The Disposable Income Indicator takes into account income available to consumers to dispose of as they wish by discretionary purchases, saving or investing. It's based on the idea that the household represents the basic unit when making essential purchasing decisions.

The indicator is developed using a range of data, including:

  • The Australian Bureau of Statistics - 2006 Census
  • Australian Tax Office - 2005-2006 tax rates
  • University of Queensland - Cost of Children Estimates.

First, we estimate income and tax costs for households across each census district. We then deduct average mortgage, rental and child support costs to arrive at the disposable income band.

Using the service

You will require valid residential addresses, with CCD's, to append the Disposable Income to your database. If you do not have CCD's as part of your residential addresses we can provide a WindowsTM based software solution.

We can give you information on two scales:

  • 1 (Lowest Disposable Income) - 10 (Highest Disposable), if preferred. This scale uses wider income bands
  • 1 (Lowest Disposable Income) to 20 (Highest Disposable Income). This scale uses smaller bands, and is only available if you buy a data licence.

Cost

The price of appending Disposable Income to your database will depend on the volume of records you would like updated and the frequency of refreshing you may choose. Disposable Income can also be purchased as a filter when selecting a target market for specific marketing campaigns.

What else should I know?

The Disposable Income Indicator is useful for gaining broad understanding of the impact of discretionary spend on consumption of goods and services. In campaigns it is often applied as an additional customer discriminator, rather than as primary targeting criteria.

A Census Collector District (CCD) is the base geographic boundary used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics to report on the Census containing, on average, between 200 - 250 households.
